Bucknell’s Outdoor Education & Leadership (OEL) program traces its roots to the Bucknell Outing Club, founded in the fall of 1966 by students who shared a passion for adventure, exploration, and the outdoors. What began as a student-led organization evolved into a university department in the early 2000s with the hiring of the program’s first professional staff member, expanding opportunities for outdoor recreation, leadership development, and experiential learning across campus.
Today, OEL offers more than 50 open-enrollment adventures each year, from local day trips to immersive break expeditions in destinations including West Virginia, Kentucky, Colorado, Utah, Iceland, Tanzania, Patagonia, and beyond. Students can also climb at our on-campus bouldering wall and outdoor bouldering park, open five days a week, or borrow equipment from our comprehensive outdoor rental center.
For nearly six decades, OEL has provided students with opportunities to build confidence, develop leadership skills, form lasting friendships, and experience the transformative power of the outdoors. Whether you’re trying a new activity for the first time or embarking on an expedition across the globe, OEL is committed to helping you connect with others, challenge yourself, and explore the world through adventure.
